Detroit Edison was originally founded in 1903, when several smaller utility companies merged to form a single entity. Over the years, the company expanded its operations and became one of the largest electric utilities in the state of Michigan. In 1995, Detroit Edison merged with Michigan Consolidated Gas Company (MichCon) to form DTE Energy, a holding company for various energy-related businesses.

DTE Electric, formerly Detroit Edison, is the largest electric utility within the DTE Energy portfolio. The company serves approximately 2.2 million customers in southeastern Michigan and operates a diverse range of power generation facilities, including coal, natural gas, nuclear, and renewable energy sources like wind and solar. DTE Electric is also involved in the construction and maintenance of power transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Under the DTE Energy umbrella, DTE Electric has been investing in cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. The company has been actively working to reduce its dependence on coal and increase the share of renewable energy in its generation portfolio. DTE Energy has set ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy resources.

In addition to DTE Electric, DTE Energy also operates several other subsidiaries, such as DTE Gas (formerly MichCon), which focuses on the distribution and sale of natural gas in Michigan, and DTE Power & Industrial, which provides energy-related products and services to industrial customers.
