Samuel P. Geisberg was an engineer, entrepreneur, and software developer who founded Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC), now known as PTC Inc., in 1985. Born in the Soviet Union, Geisberg emigrated to the United States in 1974.
Before founding PTC, Geisberg held positions at various companies, including Computervision, a pioneering CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) company. He also worked as a visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). While at Computervision, Geisberg became increasingly interested in the potential of parametric, feature-based design for mechanical parts and assemblies.
In 1985, Geisberg founded Parametric Technology Corporation with the goal of developing a new generation of CAD/CAM software that would make it easier for engineers to design complex products. The company's first product, Pro/ENGINEER, was released in 1988 and quickly gained popularity among engineers and manufacturers. Pro/ENGINEER was one of the first parametric, feature-based modeling systems, which allowed users to create and modify 3D models by defining the relationships between different parts of a design. This revolutionary approach to CAD/CAM software made it easier for engineers to make changes to their designs without having to recreate the entire model.
Under Geisberg's leadership, PTC grew rapidly and went public in 1989. The company continued to expand its product offerings, eventually evolving into a provider of a broad range of software solutions, including Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Internet of Things (IoT), and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies. PTC changed its name from Parametric Technology Corporation to PTC Inc. in 2013 to reflect its wider range of software offerings.
Samuel Geisberg left PTC in 1996, but his innovative approach to CAD/CAM software laid the foundation for the company's ongoing success. PTC Inc. remains a leading provider of technology solutions that help companies design, manufacture, operate, and service things for a smart, connected world.
