Ethan Brown

Ethan Brown is the founder and CEO of Beyond Meat, a company known for producing plant-based meat substitutes.

Born in 1972, Brown was raised in Washington, D.C., and later moved to rural Maryland. His father, a professor and conservationist, ran a dairy farm, and Brown has attributed much of his passion for the environment and interest in agriculture to this upbringing.

Brown graduated from Connecticut College with a BA degree in History and Government. Later, he earned an MBA from Columbia University. Prior to founding Beyond Meat, Brown had a successful career in the alternative energy sector. He worked for Ballard Power Systems, a hydrogen fuel cell company, where he learned about the impact of livestock on climate change.

In 2009, Ethan Brown started Beyond Meat with the aim to address four global issues: human health, climate change, resource constraints, and animal welfare. He founded the company based on his belief that by shifting from animal to plant-based meat, we can positively impact these four areas.

Beyond Meat's approach to creating meat substitutes involved the study of meat at a molecular level to understand what gave it specific flavors and textures. The team then sought to replicate these characteristics using plant-derived ingredients. This approach set Beyond Meat apart from many other companies making vegetarian and vegan products, which often simply aimed to create an acceptable alternative, rather than a close copy, to meat products.

Under Brown's leadership, Beyond Meat has experienced significant growth. The company went public in May 2019, marking the first public offering for a plant-based food company. Beyond Meat products are now available in many supermarkets and served in numerous restaurant chains worldwide.

Brown's vision and leadership in Beyond Meat have made him a prominent figure in the world of sustainable food. His work has been recognized by various entities. He was named one of Fortune’s 40 under 40 and has received the United Nations' "Champion of the Earth" recognition, among other accolades.
